Definitely do it yourself. There's nothing hard about SEO - all it takes is a little research (either by visiting forums such as these, attending seminars etc.) and you're good to go. "Professionals" that overcharge for their work really aren't worth it.

Time versus money is the key!
That being said if I had my time over again, I wouldn't have gone down the SEO diy route. I would have got top advice from the start.
If you can afford it, some good help will get you making money a lot quicker than trying to do it yourself.
Cheers, Chris. |

It really depends on what is more important to you--time or money. I think you should first go the DIY route. Learn about SEO. When you are successful, you can outsource it. You don't even have to hire an "expert". If you have younger family members, you can teach them what you know and hire them to do some of the more boring chores. They can earn money and get an education at the same time.

Actually yeah, I really agree with Pamela on getting younger family members to do some of the work for you. Especially if they're in their teens - they'll sit on the computer for hours on end and work for the fraction of the cost of what a "professional" would charge.

So far I have done this work myself. But if I ever found that my business was in a slump I would consider paying a professional.

SEO is something I have never really clearly understood, I know the purpose of it but how does one apply it?
From everything I read it seems to involve a lot of preliminary research before you even start to work on any changes to your website.
So from my perspective I would probably hire a Pro, but how would I know that I am getting what I am paying for?
What are the core questions to ask when considering hiring a Pro?
