Hi, I'm a freelance writer who has somehow managed not to have a website up until this point. Now I want to develop a simple website that will give editors a link to check out samples of my work and also sell my novel. But I don't know the first place to start. How do I find web hosting? Where can I find someone to design the site? There's so much info out there, I feel absolutely paralyzed.
Can anyone at least tell me where to start? |

| I would start maybe with a blog, so that way you have everything in there for you to do it yourself. They have templates and colors and many things that could help you as a start, and that could be set up in less than 10 minutes, and available right away. |

| Try out blogs first without a doubt...once you can manage that upgrade to paid hosting once you can afford it. |

If you are new to the design world, I must agree with the posts above mine, blogs are the way to start.
Once you get some experience and maybe know languages like PHP is when you begin to create your own unique website.
If you are looking for hosting, I would try to avoid large hosting companies and find a good personal host that won't charge as much, but deliver what you need.

A basic knowledge of HTML is useful for designing websites.
But if you use FrontPage all the code is hidden and you use it like you write a Word document. |

Blogs are one of the simplest ways to start and get an online presence.
If you do a forum search you will find a post that explains the process step by step.
Good Luck.
Let us know if you have any more questions.

Start with a free blog on blogger or wordpress.
For your type of site you could even set up a blog for showing your work, $9 for a domain name and hosting for $1 per month would do the job.
If you then wanted to actually step into a fully fledged website, use a free html editor such as mozilla composer to get your feet wet (www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/).
Or for really easy html you can try either Xsitepro or Website Builder.
Cheers, Chris |

Of all the blog platforms I've used, I have found wordpress to be most user friendly. I would recommend you purchse a domain name and host it yourself, but you won't need an expensive host for that.
I think wordpress even lists some hosts that they recommend, but I'm not sure of the price range of them. My host (hostgator) is not on their list, but it was still a very easy install. |

| ^ Servage includes a WordPress auto installer (which is up to date with the current version, 2.2). Last time I checked they're only $7/month (and they come with a ridiculous amount of storage/bandwidth too. |

I was in this same position about 6 months ago, I wanted to create a website and here is what I needed to get started.
- Basic html knowledge: No big deal you can look for free tutorials online.
- A webhost: This could be expensive if you don't choose the right one. I use the FREE ones... look online for freewebs and/or Microsoft Office Live. These 2 are easy and have nice templates.
- Time: you'll need to invest time in this project, especially if you are new at this.
All the best and good luck!
