What methods are you using to promote your website or blog?
I am interested in both free and paid methods and there respective success or lack of.
Let's have some feedback.
Regards

Hi Keith,
I submitted mine to all of the applicable directories on Robin Good's list:

At the moment I'm staying far far away from paid links (without any attributes attached, eg. rel=nofollow). Google has hinted that they're going to be taking action against those that buy links... I'm not too sure what the penalty will be though. Perhaps a drop in rankings or a ban from Google altogether?

I am against paid links. For one I think you are wasting your money because there are not traffic guarantee.s

But what about PPC?
If your ad is well targeted you will only be getting click throughs that are pre-qualified and surely you would be happy to pay for this.
This assumes you have done a few numbers prior to estimate the value of a click through to you...this is easy to work out especially if you are selling something from your site.
Remember advertising costs money, our newspapers are full of it, do you think people would spend thousands on advertising if they were not getting a return from it?
It's no different online, do your homework first, paid advertising ie: Pay Per Click (Adwords) for instance can be very profitable if done correctly.
Just my two cents.
Cheers

I'll only ever use PPC if I have a product to sell. Arbitrage just isn't worth doing at the moment.
One thing I find interesting is that people will often use PPC (and spending $1-$2 per click) just to get hits to their website and not get any return out of it. I'm not sure if they have some super business plan or they just have bottomless wallets! |

Hi Cesc,
What are the free directories that you submit to?
And how do you calculate their value?
Cheers

Generally before I submit to a directory I'll check their PR. There's no point in submitting to a brand new directory with PR0 (unless they have some great big promise that they are going to be PR6 in the future).

I have been part of many forums for many years. There are two main ways I found these forums: Searching Google for Video Game Forums, and actually being part of a forum and seeing someone advertise it. These two are big for if you are opening a forum of some kind.
