|
|
| What are the key components to a good website for a new business? I know some of the things as a consumer that I like to see. I am in the beginning phases of beginning my own cake decorating business from my home and plan to create a website to promote it. Any suggestions? |

There are many ways to look at this...
It depends what you want to get from your website.
Do you want to sell or promote products, do you want to get visitors to sign up for a newsletter or a giveaway?
Is it perhaps an informational site only?
What is it that would be most likely appealing to your visitor?
Do you need to accept payment online?
As you have suggested that you want to promote your cake decorating business then have you done a search to see what you have in the way of competion online?
I would assume that you would only be dealing with a local market, that is people within a reasonable travel distance of your home or have you arranged a delivery service.
These are just some of the things to take into account prior to deciding what the core necessities of your website might be.
I am sure that others here will chip in with some thoughts as well but first you must do a little research and planning.
Cheers

| Any suggestions would be great! As a newbie I don't even really know where to start as far as research. Thanks for giving me a place to start! |

Kevin has covered off on some good suggestions but I think the most obvious is this:
As you have suggested that you want to promote your cake decorating business then have you done a search to see what you have in the way of competion online?
I have just done a quick search on Google and find that there are 5,860,000 results for the term cake decorating.
This should keep you busy for hours, check out a few sites and see what you do and don't like.

| Thanks for the advice Keith. I have begun researching the "competition" so to speak. I have already started my list of things I like and don't like about different sites. |

Maybe you could share with us a little more about your project...we could then perhaps offer some further assistance or guidance.
Keep us posted.
