Warren, hi,
Another place I just found that is creating quite a stir is Squidoo
It's much less threatening than creating a site, is available free and gives you a nice online appearance.
They do include ads on the pages, but someone has to pay the bills and I think they are attractively presented.
Can I ask if the google ads are yours or squidoo's?
Nice page, by the way.
Cheers
Teena
PS - I'm setting up my own squidoo so I'll understand how it works. |

OK, I've created an account and just read the fine print on the money collected on your squidoo page [lens - will I ever get used to that?]:
http://www.squidoo.com/pages/faq#charity
"For a while (as with most startups) we expect our overhead will be greater than our income stream. We still need to pay our fixed costs (like servers and tools and staff salaries) or else we can't keep running and building the service. So, all revenue that comes in goes first to our overhead. Then we honor our 5% charity commitment.
Then, we divide it among lensmasters as follows:
AdSense revenue (these are the Google ads you see on every lens): This money goes into a pool, so as to avoide clickfraud. Half of the pool distributes out to lensmasters, on a PayRank scale that is based on a lensmaster's average LensRank and traffic.
Affiliate revenue (ie, referral income--like Amazon and eBay and CafePress and SuperStore sales). This is directly attributable to the lens that generated the revenue, and is not pooled with the whole co-op. The lensmaster gets a straight 50%."
So that's the lowdown on ads you place on your site
- google adsense
- cafepress
- amazon
you'll get a percentage as shown above.
OK, I'm in two minds - one part of me says, 'It's not costing anything, and if I make anything, that's a bonus.'
The other part of me says, 'It's almost impossible to make money from Amazon as it is, so 50% of that is ... well ... very little'.
I think it'll come down to personal preference - try it out - see what you think.
It may be that squidoo will get more traffic than anyone can imagine, so sheer number of hits will greatly increase the chance of you getting clicks. Or not.
It's a new opportunity, and it's up to each of us to try new things and give it a couple of months to see if it works for us.
Still interested? Check out http://www.SquidU.com "where lensmasters learn to make better lenses, and pick up tips for promoting their lenses to the public."
Good luck everyone!
Cheers

|
|
Yes, it's me again.
Just going through my archived http://www.TechCrunch.com newsletters to see what they've said about Squidoo, and found this from 05 Aug 2006:
"Hubpages allows user to create topical web page (think Wikia or Squidoo) that also included blog-like modules like comments. Pages are tagged by the creator and by readers, allowing for quick browsing among related pages.
Users are encouraged to build sites that can generate revenue. A good example is a list of important books on a topic, or a review of a product (the best running shoe, for example). Hubpages will insert google ads relevant to the topic, as well as allow links to Amazon, eBay and other affiliate-paying retailers, and split revenue 50/50 with the page creator. Compared to Squidoo, which only pays 50% of profits to page creators, that’s a good deal."
Just in case anyone's interested this is from http://www.Hubpages.com:

Teena,
What can I saw but WOW
I am learning just so much here, this forum is fantastic
First it was Blogger, Then Wordpress, Squidoo and finally Hubpages, it's a whole new language.
Blogger was my initial choice after seeing your simple explanation but in the light of what you have now presented there are many other interesting options.
All I have to do now is follow the advice often shared here and actually do something about it, let the work begin.
