I was asked today by a friend to advise on what I saw as the minimum specification for a new PC.

It is required for Home office use...Whilst $$$ are important he does not want to buy anything substandard to save money.

His current system is a P11 550, 128Meg Ram, 6Gig HDD, CD, Sound, 56K, 15" Monitor.

What do you recommend?

Cheers Wink

First off, important to note is that any new system that he buys, he will see a big increase in preformance. The PII 500 just can't compare with many of the modern chips.

I think a good place to look at is the base model that dell sells. I just went and glanced at their site, and the cheapest I saw came with 2.53 ghz chip, 80 gig HD, 256 ram, 17 inch CRT and 48X cd-rw/dvd reader drive.

All this was only 299 plus shipping. I'm not trying to push dell, but I am a fan of their machines. The things that I would want to increase in that system would be the ram and the chip. I would think about 512 of ram and then look at the chip options. I don't know anything about the performance of the Intel celeron chips right now, but it would be worth researching. I would think that 80 gigs of HD would be plenty for the average office users, for word processing and the bit. Does he have any need for a DVD burner? I would assume no, but it can be a handy way to move around a lot of files.

If he is looking to save money, one other thing that I would look at is the refurbished section of the DELL site. I have owned three machines from it, and have been really pleased with them.

I hope this gives your friend some things to think about.
