I have heard and read a little about buying and selling domain names and more recently domain parking.
Can someone explain how domain parking works please?
Are there specific companies that you can do this with and does it pay well?

Hi Wendy,
Most web host providers will allow you to park and point as many domain names as you want on your website. But if you want them to go to a specific page where you tell them this domain name is for sale, the price and and order link you might consider installing Domain Director. It is a free CGI script.
This little script will allow you to redirect different domain names pointed and parked on your site to their own webpage.
If you are going to try and promote this through the search engines, it would be a good idea to set up a main website to promote, that links to the site with all of the redirected domain names on it. If you try and promote the website with all of the domain names on it, it might actually cause you to get kicked out of most search engine indexes. Google, especially frowns on lots of domain redirects on one IP.

Wendy,
http://www.sedo.com runs a service where you can park a domain, promote it for sale and earn income from advertising in the interim.
You might want to check it out, I personally have not used the service but I have heard good reports.
Cheers
